British values at Spicey Gill

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values are principles that guide our behaviour.  At Spicey Gill Pre-School our values are modelled by adults and reinforced regularly in the following ways:

Democracy

Children at Spicey Gill Pre-School School have a voice, and they are provided with lots of opportunities for their voices to be heard. We provide many opportunities for the children to listen and speak to us and to each other.

The rule of law

The importance of following rules - and societies rules are constantly reinforced through our Positive Behaviour Policy.   Pupils are taught the reasons behind our rules and boundaries in a child friendly and meaningful way.

Individual liberty

At children at Spicey Gill are encouraged to make their own choices, knowing that they can do so in a safe and secure environment.  Children are provided with clear boundaries that they work within, but are empowered to take responsibility for their own actions.

Mutual respect

Our ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around our values of respect, compassion and trust.

Tolerance of difference faiths and beliefs

We enhance our pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to celebrate and experience such diversity. We celebrate other cultures and traditions as well as our own- for example Chinese, New Year and Diwali as well as Christmas and Easter. Our role play area includes props and clothing that help this and displays and books around our setting provide positive and non-stereotyped messages about diversity.
